Let's Save for a Rainy Day!
By Robert D. Warner

Wouldn't it be wonderful if the State Legislature makes a wise
decision this year and saves most of the recent budget windfall?
Perhaps the bulk of these funds could be placed in a savings
account for the next "rainy day." Some money
could also be added to the Permanent Fund to increase dividends
to citizens.
Apparently the Governor does not see the need to save significant
amounts of this budget surplus. Could this be a problem
of a short memory? It wasn't that long ago that Alaska
citizens were being threatened with a dreaded state income tax
and other tax increases. Now it will be the responsibility
of the Legislature to promote savings.
To use the wise words of the late Rep. Oral Freeman (D - Ketchikan)
and late Sen. Robert Ziegler (D - Ketchikan), "let's save
for a rainy day!"
