Your reader who was inquiring about the SS George Washington
sailing to Ketchikan in 1948 did not leave an email address.
The answer to her question is there was an SS George Washington
that formerly sailed with Eastern Steamship Lines between Europe
and the USA. It sold to Alaska Transportation Co in 1948 and
initiated service to Alaska, including Ketchikan that year..
