January 09, 2007 Ketchikan, Alaska - This week in Ketchikan the Zydeco Dance Workshops will be offered January 11 and 12 in preparation for the Nathan & the Zydeco Cha Chas Torch Nights performance on January 13 at the Ted Ferry Civic Center. Beginning workshops will be at 6:00pm and 7:30pm on Thursday, Jan. 11 and again at 6:00pm on Friday, Jan. 12 for about an hour. An advanced workshop will be offered at 7:30pm on Friday, January 12. Direct from Lafayette, LA, get ready for a band that's hotter than Tabasco sauce on a crawdad. The boys will be performing their raucous brand of accordion driven Zydeco for two nights in Ketchikan: a dance at Ted Ferry Civic Center, Sat., Jan. 13, including dancing, and no-host bar and Creole cuisine care of Chef Tim, beginning at 8pm, doors at 7pm, and a second concert at Kayhi on Sunday, Jan. 14 at 7:30pm. Historical Museum will hold two clay workshops with former Ketchikan
resident and Alaskan artist Carla Potter January 13 and 20. Registration

debuted at the Mainstay Gallery on Friday, Jan. 5. This fun exhibit
features works collected by Ketchikan patrons from destinations
outside of Ketchikan. Cultures and media will abound see
works from Bali to Boston complete with background tales of the
meaning of the piece or why it was purchased. Been There, Bought
That will be on display through Friday, January 26. Story time at the Library
continues regularly
throughout the year on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday at 10:30am.
After some playtime, the librarian reads stories, sings songs,
does finger plays and shows a short film beginning around 10:40
am. This program is appropriate for infants through pre-school
age children. Rehearsals begin for The Ketchikan Community Chorus! First rehearsal for the winter-spring season will be on Tuesday, January 9th, at 7 PM in the Presbyterian Church. They will be concurrently rehearsing for "Steppin' Out 2007" a March 24th concert featuring the pop-song medley, "Made in The USA" and for Haydn's "Mass in D Minor" (Nelson Mass) scheduled for performance October 20/21. Students across the United States in grades 4-12 have the opportunity to win recognition and prizes while learning about state-fish species and aquatic habitats. The State-Fish Art Contest uses art to spark the imagination of youth while providing lessons about fisheries conservation. Among other prizes, one "gallery-quality" winning entry will be used as the design for the 2007 Art of Conservation Stamp. Proceeds from the sale of the State-Fish Art conservation stamp are used to support fisheries conservation and education projects nationwide.
