Squad Responds to Call For Missing Man

Ketchikan, Alaska - At 5:18 pm Monday, the duty officer of the
Ketchikan Volunteer Rescue Squad received a call from the Alaska
State Troopers requesting assistance in locating a missing 18
year old male who was thought to be in the Carlanna Lake Area.
According to information provided by Jerry Kiffer of the Ketchikan
Volunteer Rescue Squad, a hasty team and canine unit was dispatched
to meet with the on scene trooper. The team arrived at the scene
at 6:12 pm Monday. As little was known about the young man or
his state of mind, the team was instructed to stand by until
they could be briefed by a trooper.
At 6:47 pm the troopers advised the squad that they had been
in contact with a friend of the 18 yr. old male who reported
he had picked him up around 6:17 pm.
Physical contact with the 18
yr. old male was not secured however the troopers advised the
Ketchikan Volunteer Rescue Squad that they could stand down pending
further information.
The Ketchikan Volunteer Rescue
Squad was founded November 15, 1950, in response to a Pan American
Airways crash near Ketchikan. The squad operates under the direction
of a 6-person Board of Directors. They have no paid staff, and
do not charge for their services.
Ketchikan Volunteer Rescue
Squad operates 24 hour radio watches on VHF 16, and their volunteers
are tasked with over 2,500 man-hours, in an average of 20 search
and rescue operations a year.
Receiving no public funds,
the Ketchikan Volunteer Rescue Squad depends on the support of
the community for supplies, fuel, rescue equipment and other
