Praise to the plowers
By David Hull

I would like to echo Chief Talik's praise to the people who spent most of the holidays sitting behind a steering wheel. While the airport guys got well deserved praise for their efforts and the City Public Works guys absolutely kept things going in town, the DOT guy s efforts were equally challenging and important.

They kept the State roads open for emergency traffic and everyone else from one end of the island to the other, even risking their own safety. We all have seen the picture of the plow that ended up in an argument with a ditch while plowing South Tongass Highway. We are especially happy the driver wasn t hurt and very sorry that the Alaska State Trooper was injured. It was murder that day all around but the drivers of the plows just kept going.

In conclusion, I just wanted to make sure the DOT guys were added to the appreciation list that this island community should be considering. The combined efforts of all the dedicated drivers who worked long hours to keep Ketchikan a normal as possible deserve our thanks. If you know one of the drivers stop and thank them for what they did.
