KPD's Drug Awareness at Kayhi

Wednesday

My family and I attended KPD's Drug Awareness Seminar this evening, January 13 at Kayhi. I would like to commend the Ketchikan Police Department, their guest speaker and other organizations that have put forth information regarding drug awareness for our community.

With Alaska having one of the highest addiction rates in the nation (www.samhsa.org) it is the education we put forth that will help battle the disease. It starts with our children. We as a community need to be educated in this area in order to detect signs of addiction in our youth and our community. A majority of all crime is committed because of substance abuse.

I look forward to their next meeting regarding substance abuse in our community and our youth so I might be an advocate to others. My children will have the tools necessary to have healthy functioning lives because of the knowledge gained by these education seminars. All parents, community members and kids should attend. In fact, EVERYONE should attend because we are ALL affected by the effects of substance abuse. It's not a private disease, it's communicable and effects each and every one of us. We all know someone who has been affected by the actions of substance abuse and addiction.

Thanks again, this information is a necessity in building a healthy environment for the city of Ketchikan and many generations to come. Knowledge IS power.
