Senate Education Committee to Hold Hearing on Common Core and Alaska Academic Standards

January 04, 2014
Saturday PM

(SitNews) - Next week, the Senate Education Committee will meet for two days in Anchorage to shed light on issues surrounding the Common Core and Alaska Academic Standards and their implementation.  The hearing will begin with a national perspective, how the Common Core originated and evolved.   Committee members will then move to the Alaska state level, examining policy issues, how the standards were vetted, and where they stand now.  The hearing will then move to local level education leaders and stakeholders addressing implementation and expectations.

“There appears to be a fair amount of misinformation and misunderstanding about these standards in Alaska,” said Education Committee Chair Gary Stevens, R-Kodiak.  “This hearing is intended to help the Alaska Legislature and general public understands the standards, their importance and their impact on our Alaskan students.”

The hearing will take place on Tuesday, January 7, 2014, from 8:30am to 5:30pm, and continue on Wednesday, January 8, 2104 from 8:30am to 5:00pm at the temporary Anchorage Legislative Information Office (LIO) located at 733 West 4th Avenue, room 105. This is immediately across the street from the existing LIO.

The hearing will also provide for public testimony. This hearing is open to the public and all are welcome to attend. If anyone is unable to attend in person, the meeting will be audio and video streamed at this link: http://akl.tv/

You may also go to your local Legislative Information Office to listen to or watch the hearing.

Written public testimony may be submitted to: Senator.Gary.Stevens@akleg.gov; or via U.S.P.S. to: Senator Gary Stevens, Alaska State Capitol Building, Room 429, Juneau, Alaska 99801-1182.
