"Senator Murkowski has continued to follow through in Washington DC in her efforts for Alaska fishermen. Senator Murkowski was a major force in maintaining the differentiation of wild and farmed seafood as part of USDA country of origin labeling following through with former Senator Frank Murkowski's work on this. UFA feels that this differentiation in supermarkets was a major component in the rise in many Alaska salmon prices to fishermen this year," said UFA President Bob Thorstenson, Jr. "She has also proved a very inspiring presence in rallying the Alaska fishing industry in support of the Gulf of Mexico fishing industry, inspiring the creation of the Alaska Fishing Industry Relief Mission to help our fellow fishermen in the Gulf of Mexico. This effort is a concrete way to help unify U.S. fishermen to work positively together in Washington, and is a positive contribution to improving Alaska's image in the rest of the U.S. "Senator Murkowski's efforts to safeguard Alaska waters from fish farms in offshore federal waters are also strongly supported by Alaska fishermen. Her work in opening the USDA Trade Adjustment Assistance to fishermen was a major step forward in gaining a level playing field for Alaska fishermen in competition with fish farmers and continues to provide educational benefits for years to come. Her work in obtaining IRS income averaging for fishermen, and continued attention to IRS treatment of Exxon Valdez settlement is very important and we want to publicly recognize her for these efforts on our behalf." "Senator Murkowski has been working on these many levels for Alaska fishermen and we support her efforts and want to publicly recognize her with this award," said Thorstenson.
