Alaska Ferry Summer OP Plan
By Jennifer Peterson

Monday AM
Below is the letter I wrote to Alaska Governor Palin:
Dear The Honorable Sarah Palin, Governor of Alaska:
My name is Jennifer Peterson. I have worked as a contract agent
for The Alaska Marine Highway System since 1993 in Bellingham,
Washington. I am very concerned about the operating plan for
Summer 08. I am concerned for your residents for the reasons
I will outline below.
The mis -management of Alaska Marine Highway has forgotten several
items that should be brought to your attention:
Food via semi trailer is loaded
in Bellingham for SE Alaska.
Medical. SE Alaskans come to
Bellingham and beyond for medical. Including vets headed to the
VA hospital.
Military. Coast Guard, Army
and Air force move their families, vehicles and belongings via
the AK ferry from Bellingham.
Commerce. Bellingham and points
south: cars, boats, furniture, building supplies are often brought
thru Bellingham or purchased in Bellingham and taken up on the
ferry.
Prince Rupert is not an option
for 80% of the passengers out of Bellingham. (carrying firearms,
dui on record, weather/road conditions, ID requirements)
Roads do not make money, why
should the ferry system be profitable?
It is because of my confidence
in your ability and willingness to do the right thing that I
am asking for your immediate help to correct the mounting problems
that have developed at the Alaska Marine Highway over the past
year.
With respect and for the good of all Alaska,
Jennifer Peterson
