District Attorney Adrienne Bachman announced Friday, that Doug McClain, a resident of Anchorage, was sentenced for convictions stemming from the torture of two women in a trailer located in Muldoon in April of 2007. A jury convicted the defendant and his two codefendants-Annie Shinault and Brenda Cleveland-in June, 2008. Shinault was sentenced to 51 years for her participation in the offense in October of 2008. Cleveland is set for sentencing in March.

According to the trial prosecutor, Ben Hofmeister, Superior Court Judge Patrick McKay imposed a composite sentence of 25 years and 180 days for McClain's conviction for (1) Kidnapping; (2) Assault in the Third Degree; (3) Misconduct Involving a Weapon in the Third Degree; and (4) Two counts of Assault in the Fourth Degree.

According to the evidence presented at trial, one of the victim's stole a gun and crack-cocaine from McClain-a long time drug dealer and user. McClain sought out Shinault and Cleveland to exact revenge on the victim. Shinault and Cleveland brought one of the women tortured to McClain's trailer where she was beaten, stripped naked, burned with crack pipes, had her head shaved, and raped. A second victim was brought to the trailer the next day and was beaten by McClain and Shinault after she stole a crack pipe and 20 dollars in quarters from McClain. The second victim eventually escaped from the trailer and called the Anchorage Police Department. APD secured the trailer and was able to retrieve the first victim.

Despite being acquitted of sexual assault charges, Judge McKay noted the inhumanity that occurred in the trailer was done at McClain's bidding.

Hofmeister commended the Anchorage Police Department, and in particular the lead investigator Detective Eric Hamre of the Special Victim's Unit, for the investigation leading to the successful prosecution of Shinault and the other codefendants.
