Thank you, Krista Allen(and to many who have spoken before) for voicing what many parents believe, that our youth need more healthy activities to keep them busy. The good news is, earlier this month, the Ketchikan Gateway Borough voted to begin the process of building a skatepark at the corner of Park Avenue and Schoenbar, next to the creek and across from Walker Field. This is an ideal location as it is centrally located and highly visible.

The Borough has allocated $150,000 from the Parks and Rec budget and assigned a member of their Planning Department to work on this project. Thank you to the Borough for taking this important first step. Ketchikan Youth Initiatives is supporting this project by forming a users group to help with the park design and garner support in the form of in-kind and cash donations from the community and funding from grants. The cost to complete this park including a roof to keep it dry is considerably more than $150,000. We encourage all members of our community (of all ages) who have time and/or resources to join in this effort.

Please contact the KYI Vice-President Adult Advisor, Bob Fultz, at bobzplace[AT]gmail.com; youth members Craig Jackson (text 821-8159) or Steven Perro (text 821-8829); or kyibooard[AT]gmail.com to offer your support. Your involvement is very important to carrying this project forward. Our youth are the future of our community.
