6th Grader Recognized for Heroic EffortsBy Mary Kauffman
February 26, 2013
On February 6th, while walking down the hall at Fawn Mountain Elementary School after eating lunch, Effenberger took it upon himself to come to the aid of a fellow student when he noticed a fellow student who appeared to be choking on a carrot. Effenberger first tried to give the student a smack on the back and when that didn't work, Effenberger employed the Heimlich maneuver successfully dislodging the carrot from the grateful classmate. Effenberger learned this technique in Ms. Paulson's third grade health studies class instructed by South Tongass Volunteer Fire Department volunteer Heidi Bauer. Effenberger was recognized for his heroic efforts by Mayor Kiffer on behalf of the Ketchikan Borough Assembly and the citizens of the Ketchikan Borough. Kiffer also commended the Ketchikan School District and South Tongass Volunteer Fire Department for their efforts in educating Ketchikan students about first aid.
