This February 14th marks the 15th anniversary of V-Day, a worldwide walk/dance out to raise awareness about violence against women. This year the theme is One Billion Rising which reflects the statistic that globally one in three women will be victims of physical or sexual assault in their lifetime. In Alaska, the number is almost double. Ketchikan is participating in this worldwide event to stand together against this injustice. Both men and women are invited to attend this community demonstration on February 14th from 5:30 to 6:30 pm. We will gather at the corner of Tongass Avenue and Jefferson Street in the parking lot of First Bank. Please bring posters about why you are rising, with statistics, or current events involving violence against women. WISH will provide posters as well. Music will be playing for optional dancing, and some dances will be performed. If you are interested in participating in the flash mob dance, contact WISH at 228-4090. The One Billion Rising colors are red, pink, black and white. Let’s turn something negative into something positive and rise together. For more information, please visit the V Day websites at www.vday.org or www.onebillionrising.org. Ketchikan, let’s rise!! Diane Gubatayao
