(SitNews) Ketchikan, Alaska - Historic Ketchikan has been working with the City of Ketchikan on a master plan for a 1.3 mile boardwalk that will stretch from the end of the Thomas Basin breakwater to the north end of Berth IV.

According to information provided by Stephen Reeve, Historic Ketchikan Executive Director, this stretch of public waterfront is a rare and valuable asset that few communities in the world can match.  The objective of the master plan is to design the boardwalk to provide maximum benefit to Ketchikan by striving to meet the following  goals:

  • create a waterfront for all--locals and visitors alike--to experience the water, maritime activities & retail opportunities
  • provide some weather protection to be able to enjoy the water’s edge at all seasons
  • connect the waterfront to our neighborhoods--Newtown, Downtown and Old Town--with easy and safe crossings
  • celebrate our past and present by telling the stories of our maritime history, our natural setting and our art
  • improve access and safe, comfortable movement for people of ages and mobility with places for relaxation, recreation and fun
  • create a bold vision for our waterfront that can change and be improved over time

This project is important to our visitor industry and it is important for the community as a whole said Reeve. He said Historic Ketchikan has talked with many local residents and learned from the successes of other communities in Alaska and the Northwest.

Historic Ketchikan will be hosting a Community Open House to share ideas and concepts and -- more importantly -- hear from the residents about their vision for the waterfront.

The open house will be held at the new Visitors Center on Berth II. The public is invited to stop by any time between 1:00 and 5:00 PM on Saturday, February 8th or on Tuesday, February 11th between either noon and 1:30pm or 5:00 to 7:00pm.
