Not All Property Assessment Notices Mailed
February 15, 2014
According to information provided by the Assessor's Office, the delay in mailing these assessments was due to addressing deficiencies with the 592 notices that did not meet standards for bulk mail processing by the Post Office. These 592 property assessment notices were printed by the vendor and mailed from their location in Juneau at standard postage rates. The Ketchikan Borough Assessment Department has been provided a listing of the 592 notices that were not mailed on February 5th. These 592 notices will be date stamped by the Postal Service as of the actual mailing date of each notice. The required 30-day appeal period for these 592 notices will begin as of the Post Office date stamp printed on the individual notice. The Ketchikan Borough Assessor’s Office noted that the majority of the 592 notices were addressed to individual condominium units or mobile homes located in mobile home parks. The Assessment Department is working with the Juneau-based vendor and the Postal Service to standardize their mailing addresses for these properties so that the mailing addresses are acceptable for bulk mailing purposes in the future. For 2014, the Ketchikan Borough Assessment Department issued Property Assessment Notices for 6,931 parcels of real property. Use of the bulk mailing system for the mailing of Assessment Notices saves the Department almost 50% of the postage cost for each notice mailed.
