(SitNews) Ketchikan, Alaska - Tatsuda's IGA on Stedman was hit by a substantial rock fall this week. Reports suggest the buidling suffered extensive damage. Owner Bill Tatsuda implied that the damage may put the store out of business after over 100 years.

At 12:56am Thursday, the Ketchikan Fire Department was dispatched to a report of a fire alarm activation at Tatsuda's IGA. Upon arrival crews discovered a landslide had impacted the building causing significant structural damage, including the sprinkler system piping. The building was unoccupied when the slide occurred. Firefighters were able to quickly shut-off the utilities and limit any further damage to the structure or its contents.

The Alaska Liquors Store adjoined to the grocery store also suffered damage.

No one was injured.Hearts are broken over the loss for the Tatsuda's and their employees evident by the many posts on social media by community members.

The Fire Marshal required the building be stabilized before re-entery.

For those who would like to help, a fund has been set up by First Bank to benefit the employees of Tatsuda's IGA and Alaska Liquors whose jobs have been impacted by the closures.
