Kamberi is a nursing student at Pacific Lutheran University. She said in her essay, “I remember being in high school and asking myself multiple times if I'm going to enjoy college or nursing. I was terrified mostly since I was the first in the family to attend college, I had no idea what I was getting myself into, “ And she continued by saying, “After nursing school, I do not plan on stopping with just my BSN. I have thought about going further and heading to graduate school to become a nurse practitioner. I feel like there is so much in this world that I could do to help others...”

The scholarship, endowed by the Alaska Community Foundation, awards $1,500 to a deserving student each year who must be a senior or graduate of a high school in Ketchikan, including home schooled students and GED recipients. In addition, applicants must be enrolled, or preparing to enroll, full time in a degree-seeking program at an accredited university or vocational technical education program through a certified, verifiable school by the beginning of the semester they will use the award.

Additionally, applicants must provide a personal statement outlining their plans for the future, their involvement in extracurricular activities and a brief essay demonstrating their understanding of the importance of a healthy business community.

Kamberi said that she believes “Creating a business can be difficult and easy in its own way,but I know that in order to have a successful and healthy business there has to be trust, respect, and teamwork. A healthy business not only impacts the employees, but it also has an impact on the town as well. Community members take their families to these businesses where they create many memories and meet new people all while supporting the business at the same time.”

The Greater Ketchikan Chamber of Commerce’s Scholarship Fund is supported by donations at the Annual Celebration of the Stars Auction, and by those made by members throughout the year.
