Ketchikan, Alaska - This week in Ketchikan, An Evening of Dance by KTB March 2nd and 3rd, 7:30pm - Kayhi. This annual performance showcases Ketchikan Theatre Ballet's Junior and Senior Company dancers in a diverse presentation of dance styles from classical ballet to funky modern, tap to lyrical jazz. Thurs. performance: pay-what-you-can, Fri. tickets available from McPherson Music, Seaside Trading, the Arts Council, KTB 225-9311 and at the door, sponsored by KTB.

Gallery Opening for "On the Waters of Revillagigedo" by local photographer Michael Keye Schuler will be held at the Mainstay Gallery on Friday, March 3rd. "On the Waters of Revillagigedo" features photographs highlighting the West Coast. Reception and refreshments from 7-9pm will be at the Mainstay Gallery at 716 Totem Way. The Mainstay is sponsored by the Ketchikan Area Arts and Humanities Council.

Ballroom dancing at the Rec Center! Join Instructor Jerry Pierce for dancing and lessons on March 3rd at the Rec Center from 7 -9pm nights. A suggested donation of $5 will be accepted at the door.

Call for Artists for the Mainstay Gallery's 2006-2007 gallery season EXTENDED DEADLINE: Artists are invited to submit proposals for solo or group exhibitions of their work. Curators are invited to submit proposals to curate group exhibits based on themes or genres. (Recent seasons include Young at Art- a youth art exhibit and The Illustrated word.) The Mainstay Gallery is sponsored by the Ketchikan Area Arts and Humanities Council. If you wish to submit a proposal but need help or have questions, please call the arts council to request a portfolio consultation. If you wish to be considered for an exhibit, please stop by the Arts Council to pick up information or call for more information 225-2211. Saturday Market at the Plaza! On the first Saturday of every month the Plaza is holding a market to include handcrafted items, entertainment, and food with a flea market type environment upstairs. Starting March 4th, from 9am - 2pm. For more information contact Katie at the Plaza, 225-7000.

Totem Heritage Center Native Arts Studies Program Classes:

Painting with Acrylics: At the University, taught by MJ Turek. Class begins on March 4th and meets for 7 Saturdays. Class time is 11AM-3PM. Call the University to register, limited space available so don't wait.

Sitka Fine Art Camp 2006 is accepting registrations for this year's camp. Join Middle School and High School students from around Alaska and the lower 48 in an exciting creative experience. Classes range from drawing and painting, to film animation and photography, to hip-hop dance and mask theatre. Middle School sessions run June 18 - July 1: High School from July 2 - July 16. Friday Night Insight Programs at the SE Alaska Discovery Center: Every Friday night, 7 - 8pm. The Bookstore will be open each night.

March 10th - Interpretative Cultural Tour of the Discovery Center, with Merle Hawkins. If you've never been through our exhibits here at the Discovery Center, or even if you have, and want to gain some new insights into our displays, then this program is for you. Merle Hawkins, a Haida Native and Tribal Council Vice President of KIC, has worked with us for the past 9 seasons. Join her as she guides you through the Center, and relates her expansive cultural and traditional knowledge.

March 24th - "Scenes of Mt. Aspiring Region of New Zealand's Southern Alps" Bill Standlely will present a slide show showcasing his trips to the Mt. Aspiring region of New Zealand's Southern Alps.

March 31st - "History in Rocks The Geology of Ketchikan" Naturalist Julie Rowe will guide guests through the geologic history of the Ketchikan Area.

March 17th - "A Children's Museum in Ketchikan?" Dawn Rauwolf will be presenting and interactive program about this innovative idea for Ketchikan.

Story time at the Library continues regularly throughout the year on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday at 10:30am. After some playtime, the librarian reads stories, sings songs, does finger plays and shows a short film beginning around 10:40 am. This program is appropriate for infants through pre-school age children.

Wild Salmon on Parade 2006 Call for Artists. Inspired by the example and spirit of Soul Salmon in Olympia and Cows on Parade in Chicago, this now annual event works to place large, wildly decorated fiberglass fish sculptures around Anchorage. Rasmuson Foundation Individual Artist Project Awards: Deadline for applications March 1st, 2006. Alaska Artists are being asked to submit applications for individual project awards. Grants are up to $5000 for emerging, mid-career, or mature artists to accomplish specific, short-term projects that have a clear benefit to the artist and the development of his/her work. ASCA Grant application Due dates are quarterly, the next being March 1st. All small grants applications are available online at www.eed.state.ak.us/aksca.

Solo Exhibitions for the Alaska State Museum are now being accepted from Alaska artists. Deadline for receipt of submissions is March 8, 2006. For more information and registration guidelines visit www.museums.state.ak.us.

Call for Art by Alaskan Artists for Kenai Peninsula Youth Facility, 405 Marathon Road, Kenai, AK 99611. The Department of Transportation & Public Facilities (DOT&PF) is soliciting artwork for the recently constructed Kenai Peninsula Youth Facility. The selected artwork will be located in three separate areas: vestibule, dayroom and resident wing. Submissions must be received in the office by 4pm Friday, March 31, 2006. 2006 Fish Follies at the Cordova Historical Museum expands its annual celebration of Cordova's Fisheries Heritage by hosting a juried national art show. Open to all artists 18 and over working in all media to create pieces that are all about fish, oceans, water, fishing, or seafood. Anchorage Museum of History & Art Crafts Weekend 2006 will be held Nov. 24th, 25th, and 26th at the Museum. This is a juried craft show open to artists who are residents of Alaska. Selection of works will be based on the submission of up to five quality slides or digital images that best represent the artist's current work. Deadline for submissions is May 5, 2006, visit www.anchoragemseum.org for more info or to register.

Meetings and Gatherings:

The Ketchikan Area Arts and Humanities Council Board of Directors meets the third Tuesday of every month at 6pm at the Mainstay Gallery, 716 Totem Way.

Rainy Day Quilters meet on the fourth Tuesday of the month, at 6:45pm, at Holy Name.

 

Coming attractions:

Monthly Grind, Saturday, March 18th, 7pm at the Saxman Tribal house. Live local talent, dessert and coffee, all for just $5 per adult, and $1 for kids. Buy a ticket, bring a homemade dessert and get a refund.

FUNDAY at the Museum will be held on Saturday, March 18th from 10:00 AM - Noon in the Main Gallery. This event will include fun with toys introduced and/or popular in the 1950s for the younger set. Call 225-5600 for more info.
