Ketchikan, Alaska - This Red Squirrel was photographed this week
sitting in an interesting position almost as if to show off its
cute little feet. February and March are mating time for red
squirrels, other than that time they are solitary. They store
green spruce cones in large cashes. The cashes can be up to 18
feet in diameter and 3 feet deep.
They nest in holes of tree
trunks, and nests constructed from masses of twigs, moss, leaves
and lichen in the dense foliage of the trees. With the 8 inches
of snow that fallen since Monday, this little critter is probably
snugged away in its cozy nest.
