OPEN LETTER TO SITNEWS' READERS
By Robert D. Warner

Thursday
Dear Members of the Borough Assembly:
I was shocked by the Ketchikan School Board's decision to fire
Superintendent Harry Martin. I watched the entire meeting on
the TV and was amazed that members supporting this decision provided
no clear or specific evidence. It was very clear to me that
their decision was based on politics rather than facts.
It was also clear to me that the Ketchikan School Board has been
given too much money to "play with" after the Assembly
approved funding their budget to the cap. This stupid decision
to fire Mr. Martin will cost the district and taxpayers money
that we cannot afford to waste. Please take action to cut the
school district budget and stop "funding to the cap."
I see this as the best and perhaps only method to teach these
school board members that public funds should not be wasted on
self centered political motives.
I should mention that I spent 25 years in public education and
I have seen more than my share of incompetent administrators.
I remember how frustrating it was when it took 7 long years
to terminate a incompetent director and assistant director at
the college several years ago. Mr. Martin, however, displayed
no such incompetence at this meeting. He was poised and used
facts rather than politics to support his defense. He even managed
to express a sense of humor during his ordeal. It was shameful
to see him treated in such a rude and disrespectful way.
Thank you for considering my views as a citizen and taxpayer.
Sincerely,
Robert D. Warner
