Sunday
Ketchikan, Alaska - Seven enthusiastic young Ketchikan musicians
are recipients of Sam Pitcher Music Scholarships for 2008. The
Sam Pitcher Memorial Scholarship Fund Advisory Committee awarded
$500 scholarships to each of the following students: 7th grader
Leslie Snodderly, 8th grader Sy Hovik, freshmen Louise Bryant
and Gunnar Keizer, sophomore Niles Corporon, and seniors Trapper
Bishop and April Souza. They comprise a diverse group of ages
and musical areas of interest. All hope to improve their abilities,
expose themselves to new challenges, and further their music
education this summer at The Sitka Fine Arts Camp.

April Souza, Trapper Bishop, and Leslie Snodderly.
In 2007 a challenge grant from the Reuben Crossett Foundation
and the Sitka Fine Arts Camp resulted in generous contributions
from the Ketchikan community. The funds that were carried over
from that challenge allowed this expanded number of scholarships
to be awarded in 2008. In addition, the annual winter concert,
"An Evening of Jazz, Rock and Blues," presented by
the McPherson Jazz Club Bands and the Kayhi Jazz Band is the
primary fundraiser.
The Sam Pitcher Memorial Scholarship
Fund awards scholarships yearly to help students in grades 7-12
attend summer music programs. It was established following Sam's
death in 2003 by his family and friends to honor his memory and
his great love and talent for music.
Tax deductible contributions
can be made at any time to the Sam Pitcher Memorial Scholarship
Fund, c/o the Ketchikan Area Arts and Humanities Council, 716
Totem Way, Ketchikan, AK 99901. The Sam Pitcher Memorial Scholarship
Fund is a fiscally sponsored project of the Ketchikan Area Arts
and Humanities Council.
