On learning of Kinchen's death, Governor Frank H. Murkowski said, "We extend our sincere condolences to the Kinchen family and the community of Salcha. By serving his country, Lance Corporal Kinchen was a brave and courageous individual. We can never properly repay our debt to Jeremiah or his family, but we shall never forget him." The Department of Defense said Kinchen died April 4th from an explosion that occurred during combat operations in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. He was assigned to Marine Forces Reserve's 4th Reconnaissance Battalion, 4th Marine Division, San Antonio, Texas. During Operation Iraq Freedom, Kinchen was attached to 3rd Reconnaissance Battalion, Regimental Combat Team 8, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force. Kinchen's training in Alaska was with Company E, 4th Reconnaissance Battalion located on Elmendorf Air Force Base in Anchorage. The Governor said, "Please keep the Kinchen's in your thoughts and prayers at this sad time as Nancy and I will."
