Ketchikan, Alaska - Carla Houtary-Gilmartin, Registered Health Information Technician and Certified Coding Specialist at Ketchikan General Hospital (KGH), has been named Employee of the Month by a committee of her peers. Houtary-Gilmartin has been a KGH employee for 20 years. Prior to that she worked for eight years at Fairbanks Memorial Hospital, at a long term care facility in Washington, and in two physician offices. Her health care career began, however, when as a high school student here in Ketchikan, she served as a volunteer at KGH. The co-worker who nominated her stated, "Through all the changes and innovations, Carla has been a leader and teacher. The Health Information Management Department has seen many personnel changes and Carla has always been a tremendous resource for the newcomers." In addition to her regular
duties, Houtary-Gilmartin works on the Ketchikan Cancer Registry,
which has brought much recognition to the hospital. She has also
taught coding classes via teleconference for the Health Information
Management program of the University of Alaska-Southeast.
