Wednesday
Ketchikan, Alaska - Wednesday night sailboat racing in Ketchikan's
downtown harbor officially begins on May 4. In preparation,
on Sunday April 24, 2005, three race boats were lifted by
the city-owned crane at Madison Hardware and gently set down
into the water.

First into the water was Spirit, a 27 foot Soling owned by Tom
and Norma Thompson. Next into the water was Scoundrel, a J 24
owned by Lou and Jean Bartos. The final boat into the water was
Ariel, a 30 foot Etchells owned by Jim and ML Dahl. Being new
to the racing fleet, Ariel first had to be christened, however,
which was accomplished by skipper Dahl with bubbly liberally
applied to her bow.
All three of these racing sailboats
are raced by husband and wife teams, with additional crew from
local sailors. Anyone interested in learning how to crew for
the exciting Wednesday night races should sign up online at www.ketchikanyachtclub.org
or attend the annual season kick-off Luau (BYOB & side
dish potluck) held at the KYC clubhouse in Thomas Basin at 3
pm on Saturday, April 30, 2005.
