Clarification
By Anita Hale

In response to Dave Kiffer's article, there needs to be some clarification. I'm sure his article is in jest but lest some misconstrue his experience as representative of missionaries of the "Mormon" church, I feel I must respond.

I served as a missionary in New York in the early 70's. We were required to dress modestly, never be without our companion, follow mission policy to the letter which included NOT flirting. We were expected to avoid the mere appearance of "evil".

Also, I have had these young women in my home. They do NOT have belly button rings, their hair is long but modestly styled. They dress conservatively. Their belly does NOT show. They are serious about what they do. They are also vivacious and pretty, hence Mr. Kiffer's problem.

If there was the least suggestion that any of his supposed experience were actually true, such as the flirting and belly button ring, they would be sent home.

So please do not mistake these fine young women and take Mr. Kiffer's article as a joke, as I'm sure he meant.

Yes, I know that's not usual, but this was even more disconcerting than the normal, run-of-the-mill run ins with the usual wackos and miscreants that grocery shop after normal hours.

A couple of missionaries, female ones, flirted with me.

Okay, maybe they were just being really friendly. - More....
