"The use of studded tires is a major factor in the deterioration of our highways, and their use must be strictly enforced to the legal season," said DOT&PF Commissioner Leo von Scheben. Vehicles driving on roads south of 60 degrees latitude have until Wednesday, April 15 before they must be removed. Meanwhile, vehicles driving on roads north of the 60 degrees north latitude have until May 1. The 60 degree latitude line crosses Alaska south of Ninilchik and north of Happy Valley and just north of Yakutat in Southeast Alaska. Communities subject to the April 15 deadline include Anchor Point, Homer, Kodiak and Southeast Alaska. Communities subject to the May 1 deadline include Cordova, Seward, Soldotna, Anchorage, the Matanuska-Susitna Valley and north to interior Alaska. Those driving with studded tires after the deadlines could be issued a correctable citation containing a $50 fine for each tire. Source of News:
