(SitNews) - A cross-state match of Alaska voter rolls with 21 other states indicates 25,405 Alaska voters may be also registered outside Alaska, and that 14 may have voted in the 2012 General Election in two states.

Lt. Governor Mead Treadwell said Alaska is working with the voters – and his counterpart secretaries of state – to eliminate the duplication and to investigate what law enforcement is necessary to respond to dual voting.

“In Alaska, we’re committed to ensuring our elections are free, fair, and secure. That means we make sure all Alaskans can vote easily – but only in one state,” Treadwell said.

Of the 25,405 Alaska records identified as possible duplicates, further comparison found that 11,472 records had a more current voter registration date outside of Alaska. These voters have been sent notices to confirm the match and request they cancel their registration in Alaska.

The remaining 13,933 records are more current in Alaska. The state with a matching record will contact those voters to request a cancellation in their state.

The comparison of voter history found 14 potential cases of individuals actually voting in both Alaska and another state during the 2012 General Election. The Division is waiting to receive voter history documents from other states to make a definite determination of whether these individuals actually voted in more than one state, or if there was an error in recording voter history.  After the research is completed, the names of any voters that voted in more than one state will be turned over to the Department of Law for prosecution.

“The Division is proud of its efforts to maintain accurate voter registration records, and will continue to perform data matches such as this to help keep our records accurate,” said Elections Director Gail Fenumiai.

“I’m grateful for the hard work of Alaska’s Division of Elections to ensure the voting process in Alaska remains secure. We are dedicated to running free and fair elections in this state,” Lt. Gov. Treadwell said.

The Alaska Division of Elections participated in the cross-state match, comparing Alaska’s 513,126 voter records with participating states, for a total comparison of 84,877,703 registration records.
