As proclaimed by Governor Frank H. Murkowski, May is Foster Parent Appreciation Month. Although we may not always take the time to show our gratitude to the several hundred foster parents we have in Alaska, the Department of Health and Social Services knows the importance of the care a foster parent gives to children who need to live in an alternative setting. Foster parents are the lifelines of the child welfare system. They are called on to care for some of the neediest children in the state. Foster parents are asked to feed, clothe, shelter, teach, nurture and love children who come into their homes. The plan is that it only be temporary - until the child's own parents are able to have their children returned. A foster parent's dedication, selflessness, and commitment to Alaska's foster children makes our state a better place to live. Foster parents know the rewards of caring for foster children by watching them progress and grow. The Office of Children's Services is very grateful for foster parents' special contributions to care for abused and neglected children. In honor of Foster Parent Appreciation Month, we salute foster parents. We thank them from the bottom of our hearts for their daily efforts and their commitment to Alaska's needy children and their families. This appreciation is not reserved for one month, but rather it exists each day of the year.
