"I have known both of these young men for many years, and have the utmost respect for their abilities and professional qualities," Barton said. "Pax has provided excellent leadership for Southeast Region for the past 2-1/2 years, resulting in good progress on transportation infrastructure projects throughout the region. I appreciate the job he has done - Pax was always ready with extra effort and creative solutions. His desire to return to Sitka, his family, and personal projects at home has driven his decision, and, while we fully support that decision, he will be sorely missed nonetheless." Paxton said it has been an honor and a privilege to have worked for the Murkowski administration. "I remain very supportive of resource development and building roads to our communities," Paxton said. "However, it is time for me to go home to Sitka and my family, and get on with the rest of my life." Menzies, a registered civil engineer in Alaska since 1969, has more than 48 years of professional and technical experience on engineering and surveying projects for the private sector and government agencies throughout the state. Among the talents Menzies brings to his new position are engineering management, civil engineering, geotechnical and environmental engineering, and land and engineering surveying. He holds a 1963 BS degree in civil engineering from Chicago Technical College in Illinois, and has held numerous positions on state and local boards and commissions, both professional and civic. These include the Alaska Board of Registration for Architects, Engineers, and Land Surveyors; the City and Borough of Juneau Planning Commission, and the CBJ Platting Board and Board of Adjustment; and the Juneau Parks and Recreation Board. In addition to his professional registrations as a civil engineer and land surveyor, Menzies has been a U.S. mineral surveyor since 1982. "Mal Menzies is widely respected as an engineer, and a business and community leader," Barton said. "He has been a key player in the design of many projects in Juneau, Ketchikan, and other communities throughout southeast Alaska. I look forward to working with him. DOT has many projects throughout the region that will benefit from his knowledge and experience." Menzies, who previously worked
for the Department of Highways from 1963-69, said he is "excited
to rejoin the department after a 37-year absence. I look forward
to working on many challenging projects, and, while I already
know many of the employees at Southeast Region, there are many
