Wilson Clinic and New Horizons

With all due respect to Dave Kiffer and others nostalgic for
many things in Ketchikan, the name of New Horizons was not lightly
arrived at and has far more meaning than Island View Manor.
In my five year tenure at KGH, the nursing home has not been
referred to as Island View Manor. When we completed the much
needed renovation of the nursing home it begged for a new name.
Let me explain the rationale behind the name change. In days
gone by, admission to the nursing home often meant a long stay
usually through the end of the resident's life. Today's nursing
home is dramatically different. Far more residents go home following
a period of rehabilitation with an excellent cadre of physicians,
nurses, and technicians. The residents have many new horizons
ahead of them filled with hope and opportunity. The name, Island
View Manor, is beautifully tranquil and deserves to be remembered
fondly. The name, New Horizons, speaks to the heart and hope
of our residents. It is not about you, it is about them. I am
thankful to Mr. Kiffer for raising the issue and expressing his
thoughts. I, too, believe firmly in honoring our roots. I must
say that I prefer the name Little Flower Hospital to the name
Ketchikan General Hospital but time marches on.
