Ten Percent Fuel Surcharge Added to
Alaska Marine Highway Passenger Fares

June 09, 2004
Wednesday

Ketchikan, Alaska - Beginning Thursday, June 10, 2004, the Alaska Marine Highway will add a ten percent fuel surcharge to all passenger tickets. The surcharge will apply to all new passenger fares purchased, as well as on ticket changes made after the June 10th date.

According to John Falvey, general manager of the Marine Highway, the surcharge became a necessity when rising fuel prices began to greatly impact the System's budget. "We are now grossly under budgeted for fuel in both fiscal year '04 (ending June 30) and FY '05 (beginning July 1). Like other transportation systems we have been impacted by what could amount to millions; and like other modes of transportation, we need to recoup some of these costs."

Falvey and Deputy Commissioner Tom Briggs both noted they are hopeful the increase is temporary, noting it will be lifted when fuel prices return to lower prices.
