A team comprised of Wrangell youth Damon Roher and Brendon White, as well two Ketchikan youth, took first place in the Salvation Army Bible Bowl, which occurred in Juneau April 28-29. The team then headed to Los Angeles where they competed again on June 8th.

Bible Bowl is a Bible memorization program, said Shane Halverson, Salvation Army captain in Wrangell. "It's where teams will take a book of the Bible and memorize that book and compete with other Salvation Armies."

The Wrangell-Ketchikan team competed against teams from Anchorage, the Mat-Su Valley, Sitka, Juneau and Haines. They won all three games. "Because we won we are now the Alaska division representative to compete in the western territory against nine other divisions," explained Halverson, who described taking first place as "a great honor."

According to Halverson, Bible Bowl is a program that helps significantly with reading comprehension and memorization, "Most of these kids will become better students after the program and that's already shown in our kids."
