Bear Shot By Trooper Was Killer of Fairbank's Man
June 11, 2013
Alaska State Troopers received a report of a bear mauling last week with one individual on the ground outside the cabin in the George Lake area with his condition unknown. The second individual had sought shelter inside the cabin and called for help. Helo-2 responded from Fairbanks, a Pave Hawk was dispatched from Eielson and an Alaska Wildlife Trooper responded by airboat. At approximately 9:00 PM Thursday, personnel from Eielson located the person inside the cabin and the body outside the cabin of Robert Weaver, 64 of Fairbanks. Troopers searched the area last Thursday, but no bear was located. The Department of Fish and Game was notified of the attack and the death. While the Alaska Wildlife Trooper was conducting the death investigation, a black bear wandered on scene. The bear was killed by the Trooper. It is unknown Thursday if the bear was the same animal that mauled Weaver. Next of kin was on scene and notified of the death then transported to safety. The black bear's remains were transported last Thursday to Fairbanks for a necropsy by the Department of Fish & Game. The necropsy results were announced today and confirmed that the bear was determined to be the bear that killed Weaver.
