My kid is not fat! ... no really. By Linda Beaupre June 11, 2014
I am going to have to respectfully disagree with your argument. I have heard of these letters before reading your letter to Sitnews. My child is not yet school aged, but let's pretend he is. I decided to check out the CDC's website and input my child's height, weight and age to determine his BMI. The result was surprising and I am sure I would have gotten a stern talking too from the school if I had recieved such a letter. My child is 2 months shy of 3 years old, 38.5" and about 30.5 lbs. Skinny, yes. But boy was I surprised to find out that my child is SEVERLY UNDERWEIGHT according to the BMI calculator and that I had to seek medical attention immediately. Underweight? My child that has been growing so incredibly well the last few months? No. In fact, he has been consistently gaining weight and growing and actually gained quite a few percentiles on the CDC's own growth chart for boys aged 2-20 as well as the WHO growth chart. Right now he's just about right at the 50th percentile for boys his age. In other words, remarkably average. There's no sudden drops or spikes or anything that has ever concerned his pediatrician in regards to his weight. He has also been consistently in the 95th percentile or higher for height his entire life. Yet the CDC has big warnings and red letters saying my child is very underweight and his BMI is in the 1st percentile for his age.Strange. I would not take kindly to the school telling me my lean, healthy, happy, active son is underweight.
