Arrives In Ketchikan
July 13, 2004
Tuesday
Ketchikan, Alaska - The Greenpeace ship the Arctic Sunrise arrived
for a two-day stop in Ketchikan on Monday beginning a one month
tour of Southeast Alaska. During the Arctic Sunrise's Southeast
Alaska tour, the Greenpeace Forest Campaign will be calling for
a moratorium on commercial logging and road construction in the
Tongass National Forest.
The Arctic Sunrise,
photographed while visiting Ketchikan, was once a Norwegian sealing
vessel before Greenpeace purchased it in the mid-1990's.

Quoting Greenpeace, "This work is part of our national campaign
to end large-scale commercial logging and road construction on
public lands - land owned by the American taxpayer. Our public
lands are the final refuge for much of America's last intact
forest areas."
The Arctic Sunrise's one month
tour of Southeast Alaska will also include visits to Hydaburg,
Craig, Kake, Angoon, Juneau and Sitka.

Listen to this
KRBD story... Federal
and state agencies have formed a special security task force
in preparation for next week's arrival of the Greenpeace Vessel
Arctic Sunrise. As they did during last year's visit of the Greenpeace
Vessel Esparanza, the U.S. Forest Service, Coast Guard and Alaska
State Troopers have formed the Southeast Unified command to deal
with potential safety or security threats during the Arctic Sunrise's
one-month tour of Southeast Alaska. Deanna Garrison has this
report.
