AIRPORT FERRY FEES AN EMBARRASMENT FOR THE CITY OF KETCHIKAN
By Lynne Miller

I was heartbroken to hear it told on Sitnews about the unfortunate young person's having to tearfully panhandle in order to make it off Gravina Island in response to not being aware ahead of time that there is a $5.00 MANDATORY fee for PUBLIC ferry access off the island after you arrive in our fair city, Ketchikan, Alaska.

For persons to distinguish that a person has arrived at Ketchikan International Airport and not the "city of Ketchikan" - and thus should expect when they step off a Alaska Airlines flight to have to fork out MORE money to get to the actual city and borough is twisted logic.

In my opinion to force a person to panhandle (and/or swim across to Revilla Island) if they lack the funds PUBLICLY agreed upon for travel back and forth from our "International Airport" is unacceptable. I apologize to this person for living in a community where unfortunately it is PUBLICLY accepted that it cost that much to ride the PUBLIC ferry back and forth.

I never thought I would see the day it cost $5.00. But then who knows what the "publicly" sanctioned amount will be by this time next year: $7.00, $9.00, $10.00? Enough already. I say the day it was $2.00 was a high enough PUBLIC fee. Really and truly. Or are we really "welcoming" anyone to our fair city? I beg to differ.
