Ketchikan Concrete Classic
By Tracy Mettler
July 27, 2006
Thursday
In the spirit of the Nenana Ice Classic, which had a jackpot
of over $200,000 in 2006, I would like the Chamber of Commerce
to sponsor the 1st Annual Ketchikan Concrete Classic. To win
the Ice Classic, the winner must guess the day and time of the
ice breakup in the Tanana River which runs through the town of
Nenana. There were 8 people who got it right this year...down
to the minute! That, ladies and gentlemen, is raw excitement!
The winner of the Concrete
Classic would be the person who correctly guesses the day and
time that the first big chunk of concrete breaks loose from the
newly poured slabs on Tongass Avenue. The Grand Prize? How
about $50 and 1 round trip a day from Thomas Basin to Bar Harbor
aboard the Water Taxi during the summer of 2007 when crews are
tearing out all that concrete again? (This assumes the Borough
would have no objection to the Taxi providing this service.)
With the realization that construction in Alaska is NEVER easy,
and my tongue firmly in cheek,
