The 2006 Blueberry Arts Festival Saturday, August 5th from 10am-5pm at the State Building in downtown Ketchikan is an event you don't want to miss. Artist booths, food and game booths, slug races and weigh-ins and the feisty Battle of the Bands competition are just a few of the highlights for this annual hometown event. Ongoing attractions: Our Town: The Life and Times of Ketchikan, the museum's annual summer display, on now through September 30th at the Tongass Historical Museum, 629 Dock Street. Point Higgins Library Opens June 13 through August 10. Call the Library at 225-0370 for more information. Story time at the Library continues regularly throughout the year on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday at 10:30am. After some playtime, the librarian reads stories, sings songs, does finger plays and shows a short film beginning around 10:40 am. This program is appropriate for infants through pre-school age children. Former Ketchikan Vista Volunteer Amos Hopkins hikes the Appalachian Trail for the arts. On the East Coast, the Appalachian Trail is 2,175 miles long running from Maine to Georgia and takes approximately 6 months to hike. Amos and his girlfriend Katy left on May 19th and expect to finish around the end of October/ early November. They are hiking this trail to raise money for the Raymond Thunder-Sky Scholarship www.visionariesandvoices.com, and for the Bluegrass Music Trail Project, www.uacvoice.org. The First City Players will be holding auditions for the fall musical Oliver, running November 3, 4, 10, 11, and 12 at Kayhi. Auditions will be held August 28, 29, and 30. Roles are available for 19 men and boys, 8 women, and large chorus of men, women, and children. Interested actors must call the First City Players to arrange an audition date and time, 225-4792. Call to artists to submit found and readymade art for Re-Find, an open-call exhibit at The Mainstay Gallery throughout the month of September 2006. Editors are looking for poems (100 lines, maximum), short stories and essays (up to 2500 words), and artwork suitable for grayscale reproduction. Please submit your work in the body of an email message (to info@ketchikanarts.org) or on a CD. Hard copies mailed in will be accepted as well. Publication will be in November. Those selected for publication will receive one copy of Inside Passages. Additional volumes available to participants at a discount. Inside Passages is published annually by the Writers Forum, which is a program of the Arts Council. Meetings and Gatherings: The Ketchikan Area Arts and Humanities Council Board of Directors meets the third Tuesday of every month at 6pm at the Mainstay Gallery, 716 Totem Way. Rainy Day Quilters meet on the fourth Tuesday of the month, at 6:45pm, at Holy Name.
Coming attractions: Xaada Tak'anlang Haida Descendant Dancers: Once a month throughout the summer, the Haida Descendant Dancers will perform at the Totem Bight Clan House in the Totem Bight State Historical Park. The next dance will be Friday, August 11th from 6:30-7:30pm. Admission is free to the public and coffee and cookies may be served.
