July 4th brings out the patriot
in all of us
By Congressman Don Young

Monday
This week will mark the 231st anniversary of our Nation's Independence.
Our country has been through a lot the past two plus centuries.
From the War of 1812 to the Civil War to World Wars I and II;
from Vietnam to the Persian Gulf War to our present War on Terrorism,
countless Americans have put their lives on the line to fight
to keep our country free and independent. Without the brave
souls who have made their love of their country a priority, one
can only imagine where the United States would be right now.
As home to five major military installations, Alaska has sacrificed
many of its finest citizens so the rest of us may maintain our
independence and freedom. On this July 4th, let's remember those
who have given of themselves and engaged in our fight for independence.
We, in Congress, have been busy these past few months passing
legislation that will continue to provide the best we can for
our Nation's veterans. I have voted to improve the management
of medical care, personnel actions, and quality of life issues
for members of the Armed Forces who are receiving medical care
in an outpatient status; to improve the outreach activities of
the Department of Veterans Affairs; to extend the period of eligibility
for health care for combat service in the Persian Gulf War or
future hostilities from two years to five years after discharge
or release; and to direct the Secretary of Veterans Affairs to
provide certain improvements in the treatment of individuals
with traumatic brain injuries, among many other key pieces of
legislation that will continue to provide for our Nation's Veterans.
July 4th is a day that brings out the patriot in all of us.
We live in a great country where our human rights are protected
and we can live without fear of persecution. Let us honor the
great Americans and their families who sacrifice much to protect
these freedoms every day. From the bottom of my heart, thank
you to all service members past, present, and future who protect
our Country and its people. God Bless.
