History Made: Group Gathers 40,000 Signatures From 40 Districts in 90 Days
July 12, 2013
“What became clear as the campaign came to a close was the urgency most Alaskans felt to go out and find a petition book to sign. People of all shapes, colors, sizes, and political persuasions signed the book as Alaskans because they don't understand the bad business deal made last session by compromised politicians. Giving billions away with nothing in return just doesn't make any sense,” stated campaign coordinator Pat Lavin. Hundreds of volunteers from across the state responded to the urgency of the 90 day timeline. Mandated to pass a signature threshold in 30 districts, last night the campaign officially passed the signature threshold in all forty Alaskan districts. Thank you to Kotzebue, Haines, Bethel, Craig, Elim, Dillingham, Juneau, Anchorage, Sitka, Wasilla, Fairbanks, Valdez, Ketchikan, Nome and the other dozens and dozens of communities who rallied together logistically to gather signatures. "Tomorrow I am proud to deliver forty thousand signatures to the Division of Elections on behalf of the repeal campaign and the Alaskans who stood up to protect our constitutional rights to referendum and a constitutional obligation that our common resources be developed for the maximum benefit of the people," stated Alaskan founding father Vic Fischer who along with Jim Whittaker of Fairbanks and Bella Hammond of Lake Clark served as a prime sponsors of the repeal referendum. After the Division of Elections verifies signatures, the repeal initiative goes to the 2014 primary ballot next August.
