Bugge's Beach

I grew up in Ketchkan, bike riding out to Bugge's Beach many summer days as a teanager.

In about 1945 or 1946, when I was just learning to drive, Dich Borch organized a big project at the beach. He gathered a bunch of us youny-ins and, with the help of Public Works equipment (trucks, bull-dozer, etc) we scooped out the muck from the enclosed beach area. Then the big job. We added 2'-8" to the top of the dam and a diving board mount on top of that.

Unfortunately, our mix proved to be pretty bad. Over the next couple decade the additions crumbled away... mostly, anyway. As far as I know, the old (original) part of the dam is still standing. Some said the sand/gravel we used should have been washed with fresh water as if it was damp with salt water, that would explain why it crumbled away those years later.

I enjoyed June Allen's article. Especially all the bio on Mr. Bugge and family.

A natural tidewater mini-bay between natural rock formations formed a high-tide pond, the neck which was dammed with a rock-and-cement breakwater many years ago to create a "bathing pool." The long, narrow strip of Bugge Beach is pocked with tide pools for discovering marine life and there's dry land for picnic tables and play. It's one of the few beach playgrounds along Ketchikan's road system. - MORE...
