Northway Earns Doctoral Degree in Nursing

Northway's capstone project examined the role that nutrition advice plays in improving the health of Alaskan adolescents. The work also included development of a continuing education module for Nurse Practitioners. Activities for the project included working with the Ketchikan Gateway Borough School District Wellness Committee and the Alaska State Alliance for Healthy Kids. Northway has lived in Southeast Alaska for 18 years. Before becoming a Family Nurse Practitioner, she worked in many areas of nursing over a 40 year career from big Seattle hospitals to smaller rural community hospitals in Oregon and Alaska. Professional education includes a BSN from Seattle University, MBA from Marylhurst University, Oregon, a Master’s degree in Nursing from UAA, and Doctor of Nursing Practice from Frontier Nursing University, Kentucky. She spent many years in health care management, and has demonstrated success at improving effectiveness of organizations. In Ketchikan she is known for playing a key role in the startup, development, and coordination of the successful local UAA RN program. Several years of family practice includes caring for all ages from babies to elders. Frontier Nursing University, a graduate school of nursing and midwifery, offers distance-learning programs, educating nurse-midwives and nurse practitioners who provide primary care for women and families residing in all areas, with a focus on rural and underserved communities. Founded by Mary Breckinridge in 1939 in the mountains of southeastern Kentucky, FNU has been educating nurses for more than 70 years and currently has an enrollment exceeding 1,500. Students enrolled in FNU’s distance education programs are from all areas of the country and the world. The graduation ceremonies will be held on the historical FNU campus in Hyden, Kentucky, on October 25, 2014.
