Vote for Agnes Moran

By Gary Wilken

Tuesday

I have had the pleasure to work with Agnes Moran in recent years in her efforts to achieve greater fairness and equity in State funding of K-12 education. Her dedication, commitment to public service, intelligence, and determination are evident to anyone who, like I, has worked with her.

As a member of the Alaska State Senate for 12 years (1997-2008), I participated in bringing a number of significant reforms to State education funding. Regrettably, in the six years since I left the Senate, some of those reforms have been eroded. Consequently, greater and greater burdens are being placed on the citizens of the Ketchikan Gateway Borough, the City and Borough of Wrangell, and the City of Hydaburg in your District 36.

Agnes has demonstrated her understanding of the complex elements of education funding. She has shown leadership and courage in the pending challenge of the constitutionality of aspects of State education funding. Not only did she vote as a Borough Assembly Member to initiate that challenge by the Borough, she joined the lawsuit as a private party plaintiff. The lawsuit challenges a discriminatory and irrational aspect of education funding that has cost the taxpayers of the Ketchikan Gateway Borough literally more than $100 million in just over the past two decades.

I fully support that lawsuit and am proud that the Assembly in my hometown, Fairbanks, formally supports Ketchikan’s lawsuit as a “friend of the court”.

Agnes has clearly shown her leadership in the arena of education funding. House District 36 needs her skills, knowledge, and determination to protect your interests and to ensure that the students in southern Southeast Alaska receive fair funding of education.

I thank you for your consideration and urge you to vote for Agnes Moran on August 19.

Respectfully submitted,

Gary Wilken
