Water Main Break Repaired
July 15, 2019
By Saturday evening the repaired water main was refilled and disinfected water was again moving to the Bear Valley Reservoir.
The repair was delayed while waiting for needed repair materials which arrived Saturday afternoon. During the wait, Ketchikan Public Utilities had isolated the water main and drained it preparing to making the permanent repairs. During Friday and Saturday while the water main was isolated, the remaining water stored in the Bear Valley Reservoir was the sole supply of water for the entire community until the repairs were completed. The excavated area in Schoenbar Road where the repairs occurred was backfilled in preparation for pavement restoration with the plan to reopen the road to traffic. The City of Ketchikan Fire Department responded to the report of a vehicle halfway submerged in flooding waters on Schoenbar Road at 5:00 AM Friday. Upon arrival the Ketchikan Fire Department found a vehicle nose down in a sink hole and reported that Ketchikan Police Department officers were already on the scene. The officers and had performed a heroic rescue of the driver from the flooding vehicle and the driver was not hurt. Ketchikan Public Utilities thanked everyone who helped keep the community from running out of water by consuming as little as possible during this challenging period.
