Southeast Alaska - Early
Saturday morning, a Coast Guard Air Station Sitka Jayhawk helicopter
crew launched in response to a report that the fishing vessel
Samoke became engulfed in flames near Legma Island, about 20
miles south of Sitka.
After arriving on scene, the
helicopter searched the area and located the two operators of
the Samoke, who abandoned the burning boat for safety on a nearby
beach. The crew aboard the fishing vessel Allure, who reported
the fire, remained on-scene and transported the persons back
to Sitka where a EMS crew treated them for minor injuries. (Official
