Found property procedures
By John Maki

"Karen" recently placed an ad for the owner of a bicycle to reclaim it.  She didn't want to turn it in to the Ketchikan Police Department because finders of property lose the property to auction.

That is the way it was done in the past but current Alaska State Law states that found property can become the finder's property after one year of not being claimed and if the finder wants the property.  This is now our procedure.  We will put a "hold" on the property for one year where it cannot go to auction.  If an owner can prove it is their property and reclaims it, we will notify the finder.  If not, we will notify the finder to pick it up.
