Ketchikan dock expansion
By Karen Lybrand
August 10, 2005
Wednesday
I was pleased to read a well-constructed, thorough viewpoint
from Eric Muench. His letter speaks to the heart of the dock
expansion issue and gives voice to the views of many longtime
Ketchikan residents.
In the rush to develop, it
is often the small business owner who gets trampled on, and in
the long run the spirit of a community suffers. I visited Ketchikan
this summer and was struck by the wholesale transformation of
the downtown area. While the downtown area bustled during the
day, it was desolate by 4pm. I remember when the spruce mill
dock was lined with barges and the smell of cedar freshened the
air. Now all one smells is money, and it saddens me.
