The University of Alaska Southeast Ketchikan will officially open the doors to the UAS Ketchikan Educational Support Center in Craig, Alaska on Monday, August 29, 2005. The public is invited to the open house to meet the staff and learn about services to be offered in the Craig location on Monday from 11:00 am to 1:00pm. The Educational Support Center is located in Room 103 of the Craig Community Association Building. Refreshments, door prizes and give-a-ways are planned for the event. Craig resident Lily Chenhall is the Instructional Technician hired by UAS Ketchikan to staff the center. In addition to Lily, UAS Ketchikan Interim Campus Director Cathy LeCompte and UAS Ketchikan Student Services Coordinator Chris Hoyt will be on-hand at the open house to answer questions. UAS Ketchikan secured a five-year federal grant last October aimed at increasing participation and improving success of students in rural Alaska who are taking university coursework. The grant's purpose is to design a support system that is similar to an on-campus system in rural communities. In addition to the UAS Ketchikan Educational Support Center in Craig, a second site will be opened in Metlakatla to provide educational support services to the residents of Annette Island. The University of Alaska Southeast
Ketchikan Campus provides a wide variety of educational courses
and programs to Ketchikan and the surrounding communities throughout
the year. Many course offerings are available via both locally
and through distance avenues including web-based, audio conference,
teleconference and satellite offerings. Through these offerings,
students can achieve certifications, associate, bachelor and
master degrees.
