A Coast Guard rescue crew from Air Station Sitka responded to a signal from an Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon in the vicinity of Peril Strait on the north side of Baranof Island approximately 30 miles north of Sitka around 11:15 p.m. Sunday.

An MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter launched to investigate the signal and located a downed aircraft with two deceased people inside. The aircraft, a Baron-55, was approximately 200 feet up on a hillside in dense forest.

Names of the deceased are being withheld until notification of next of kin.

The Coast Guard is assisting the Alaska State Troopers in the recovery of the pilots today. An MH-60 Jayhawk is transporting the troopers to the scene. This recovery is not related to the missing Juneau Pilots and missing float plane the Coast Guard is also currently searching for.

The cause of the accident will be investigated by the National Transportation Safety Board.
