Odds and Ends... By Joey Garcia August 07, 2013, 2013
Surely we are a people in a city of diversity, but I will be focusing on the Filipinos who comes and go during the fishing season. they seem to disregard the riches and income that derive from their jobs, except for the few lesser than 15% that had been here and have survived and come what may, they have joined the diversity of life in the Gateway City called Ketchikan. BUT, getting entangled with what we call diversity, I sometimes wonder as a Filipino, the mode has changed a lot among us. I do not really know if I got too much having been influenzed with my American Dream or the trademark of being an ethnic Filipino. I understand the pros and cons of the situation and I believe the quote like "When you are in Rome, be a Roman" sort of. I believe that as Immigrant to this Land of the Free, it is surely a democratic way of life and without comparison. Sure, America has problems but as the greatest nation on earth, people flock to this country seeking the American Dream. Firstly, knowing the history of Alaska, sometimes called the forgotten state, is really fantastic for Filipinos to know and learn from it. As the Philippines is the only country that can speak and understand English, some of it are quite termed as "communicable" but as workers in a fish processing company, it is somewhere between the 7 to 10 on the scale. I am sure that Ketchikan has garnered revenues from visiting tourists during the summer season. I am sure that our roads and parks, our Ports and Harbors, our scenic places where Eagles soar, our environment so rich to behold, but this is not enough. We need to spark ourselves and be proud to behold we are Ketchikanians. Joey Garcia
